Power Steering Maintenance
Most common power steering systems use an engine driven hydraulic pump with a hydraulic assisted power steering rack or box.
More recent advances include remote electric pressure pumps and four wheel hydraulic steering systems.
How do I know if something is wrong?
Oily marks under a garaged vehicle is a comon tell tale sign.
A more dramatic symptom is the steering wheel becomes harder to turn. Any change in steering must be investigated immediately. Regular maintenance will reduce the risk of a dangerous situation occurring and we also advise checking your power steering fluid level regularly between services.
Why do power steering systems fail?
The single largest cause of failure is a worn pump due to low fluid levels. Worn pumps operate inefficiently and circulate metal particles which damage other components.
Steering rack boots need to be intact to stop contamination.
Hydraulic system components need to be in good condition to avoid leaks and operate efficiently.
To ensure reliability, we recommend a pump and filter replacement occurs whenever a new steering rack or box is fitted.
How should I maintain my power steering?
Your system needs to be serviced at least every 20,000km or 12 months, which includes fitting a quality in-line fluid filter.
